A Thomas Jefferson Monticello Dinner at 1776

Lynn and I just returned from a special dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants, 1776.

Just like us, they are a family operated business started in 1990 by Andy and Terrie Andresky. It was a most refreshing and patriotic dining experience featuring four courses of a menu inspired by one of our Founding Fathers and President, Thomas Jefferson. Not only was the majority of food locally sourced, it featured incredible Jefferson food history

He also introduced waffles and vanilla ice cream.

He gave pecan trees to George Washington that still stand at Mount Vernon.

He grew over 25 varieties of peas at Monticello.

He was one of the first persons on record to grow tomatoes in America.

Jefferson cultivated an apple tree variety called Spitzenburger.

He introduced jambalaya and gumbo to the White House.

He had arguably the largest wine cellar in America.

But more important than all this, the Fourth of July is a celebration of the Declaration of Independence and you know how proud I am to be an American. So tonight, when I hit my knees I will say a special prayer to God thanking our forefathers who wrote it, and all those who defend it.

That’s right, I mentioned God, and I pray. Judge me if you must.

Cobham SATCOM Americas Regional Partner Conference

Lynn and I just returned from the 2015 Cobham SATCOM Americas Partner Conference in Newport, RI. It was so refreshing to hear frank, open discussion about strategy and tactics within the industry. The Cobham team did a wonderful job communicating their intentions. We have a lot of confidence in working together toward a successful future, as we know how committed they are to their products and craft.

A special shout-out is due to Heather Schueler from the Cobham team. All too often these outstanding performances go unrecognized and unsaid. Heather has been an ambassador for Cobham SATCOM since day one, but continues to impress  us by her ability to spread the word to large audiences with integrity. The Real Story of Memorial Day

Memorial Day reminds us of beach vacations and burgers on the grill. But true to its origin, we use it as an opportunity to honor those who have served our country with honor and respect.

11351427_10206550351781801_5591566191882448595_nAccording to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, it was originally called Decoration Day, to celebrate veterans who died during the Civil War. Today both the North and the South disagree on where the holiday first originated; many cities lay claim that they were the first. However, both sides agree May was chosen for being a time when flowers would be in bloom.

After much debate, Congress named Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of the holiday. A citywide, formal observance was first held on May 5, 1866.

The first large-scale observance of Decoration Day took place at the Arlington National Cemetery in May 1868. During that ceremony, children placed flowers at the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers, singing hymns and reciting prayers.

Cities all around the country were observing the holiday by the end of the 1800s. Initially celebrated on May 30, the holiday was shifted to the last Monday of the month in 1971.

That same year, Congress declared Memorial Day an official national holiday. No longer was the celebration limited to veterans from the Civil War, but those courageous individuals who have fought and died throughout our nation’s history.

I am sensitive to our Armed Forces members and have great respect for them. Let us all remember those who served and gave all. This is not just another three-day weekend, but one where we are empowered to celebrate freedom because of the sacrifice of others.

Why Wisconsin Satellite Teleports are State of the Art

After digging to a depth of 10 feet last year outside Buffalo, New York, scientists found traces of copper cable dating back 100 years. They came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a Los Angeles, California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet somewhere just outside Oceanside.

I cannot think of a more appropriate time to launch our new website and blog than today, Veterans Day 2014. On this Veterans Day I ask you all to pause pay tribute and give thanks to those men and women both living and dead who serve and served our country.
