Today, we will be discussing Committed Information rate over satellite. (CIR) Committed Information Rate IsoTropic Networks offers REAL Committed Information Rate (CIR). Some of our competitors define CIR as the data rate that they will commit to – 2/3rds of the purchased package data rate, 90% of the time. By their definition, if you purchase a 512 x 128k feed, you will receive 340 x 85k throughput 90% of the time. This is their “commitment”, not their guarantee.
There are two types of REAL CIR – Dynamic (triggered by Quality of Service – QoS) and Dedicated (also known as SCPC). Why is REAL CIR important? Throughput is more than just an average speed over time. For services such as VoIP to operate cleanly and successfully, they need to have priority over other broadcast from the site. This is QoS – where the protocols utilized for VoIP are given top priority over HTML, FTP and TCP IP packets. It is important for these packets to transmit in the proper order, and in an even stream. If the VoIP packets are held – even by fractions of a second – for the data packets to transmit, chopping of the voice signal will occur.
IsoTropic Networks uses a multi level strategy to assure not only the bandwidth availability (REAL Dynamic CIR), but also proper QoS tagging and packet segmentation to GUARANTEE the smooth transmission of streaming protocols such as VoIP.
Dedicated CIR is for use by customers requiring 100% dedicated circuits such as internet backbone, full time video broadcasts and large telephony requirements. This is accomplished by providing dedicated satellite bandwidth (SCPC).
